BusRD$400 to RD$475

Santo Domingo to Santiago de los Caballeros is about 155 km and 2 to 2.5 hours on the Autopista Duarte, with a single RD$100 toll. By coach, Metro Tours charged RD$475 in 2026 and Caribe Tours around RD$400 to RD$450 (about US$7); a private transfer, around US$130 to US$190.

This links the country's two biggest cities and has the most frequent bus service: between Metro, Caribe Tours and the guaguas from km 9, there is almost always a departure within the hour. For business trips, family visits or carrying on to Jarabacoa, the bus is the default choice.

A private transfer makes sense if you land at SDQ and want to go straight there, if you have a lot of luggage or if you travel as a group: with four people, the cost per head gets close to a taxi plus the bus.

By private car or driving yourself

The whole route is on the Autopista Duarte (DR-1), four to six lanes, passing Villa Altagracia, Bonao and La Vega. The only toll, at km 25, charges RD$100 per light car since January 2025. It is a fast highway but with heavy truck traffic, entries and exits without merge lanes, and motorbikes on the shoulder; keep your distance and watch for U-turn points.

A private transfer for 1 to 3 people was around US$130 to US$190 in 2026, and a van around US$170 to US$240. From SDQ, add 30 to 45 minutes to cross or skirt the city. The northern exit from Santo Domingo clogs at rush hour and on Friday afternoons; on Sunday afternoons the heavy traffic runs the other way, into the capital.

By bus

Metro Tours publishes timetables and fares: RD$475 each way in 2026. Monday to Saturday it leaves Avenida Winston Churchill at 7:00, 9:00 and 11:00 am, 12:30, 2:00, 4:00 and 7:00 pm; Sundays and holidays have nine departures. In Santiago it arrives at Avenida Juan Pablo Duarte at Maimón. From Santiago to Santo Domingo there are departures from 6:00 am (Monday to Friday) to 8:00 pm.

Caribe Tours has the widest network and frequent departures from its 27 de Febrero terminal; a 2026 Easter week report put formal coaches at RD$350 to RD$400, and another 2026 check gave RD$450 after an increase. Both companies take about 2.5 hours.

Cheaper still are the guaguas and shared cars leaving from km 9 of the Autopista Duarte, around RD$250 to RD$300 according to the same 2026 report, with more stops and less room for bags.

Other options

Santiago has its own international airport (STI, Cibao) with direct flights from the US and elsewhere; if your trip starts there, you don't need to go through Santo Domingo. Uber works in both cities and some drivers accept the full trip, but it isn't the norm. A rental car is handy if you're carrying on to Jarabacoa or Constanza.

Tips

  • For Jarabacoa, Caribe Tours runs its own route from Santo Domingo; you don't have to go via Santiago.
  • Buy your ticket early on Sundays and holidays: return buses to the capital fill up.
  • Don't stop on the shoulder of the Duarte; use the roadside stops and fuel stations.
  • If you land at SDQ at night, a private transfer saves crossing the city to the terminal.
