Punta Cana to Samaná
Distance300 km
Drive time4 h 30 min to 5 h 30 min
Private carUS$280 to US$380

Punta Cana to Samaná is about 300 km by road and 4.5 to 5.5 hours, because Samaná Bay forces you around the west side. There is no direct bus. A private transfer for 1 to 3 people was around US$280 to US$380 in 2026.

On the map they look close, but the bay and Los Haitises National Park sit between the two regions. There are three real options: a private transfer by road, two buses with a change in Santo Domingo (a full day of travel), or getting to Sabana de la Mar and crossing the bay by boat, an option with irregular schedules.

Many travellers combining the two regions solve it differently: fly into Punta Cana and out of Santo Domingo or El Catey, or the other way round, to avoid doing the whole trip.

By private car or driving yourself

The route most drivers use runs west from Bávaro on the Autovía del Coral and Autovía del Este, skirts Santo Domingo on the ring road and takes the Autopista del Nordeste to El Catey and Samaná. Add the tolls of both routes: around RD$400 to RD$500 between Bávaro and Santo Domingo and about RD$800 to RD$1,000 on the north-east highway, more than RD$1,200 in total (about US$20). Some navigation apps suggest inland routes (Hato Mayor, Monte Plata), but they are slower roads.

A private transfer was around US$280 to US$380 in 2026 for 1 to 3 people, and a van for 6 to 10 people around US$350 to US$480; some booking platforms listed PUJ to Samaná prices near the top of that range. Ask for tolls and a meal stop to be included. Leave early: if you set off after midday, you'll be on the north-east highway after dark.

By bus

There is no direct bus. The usual combination is Expreso Bávaro from Bávaro to Santo Domingo (about 3 hours, around RD$400 to RD$500), a taxi between terminals, and Caribe Tours from Santo Domingo to Samaná (about 2.5 to 3 hours; one traveller reported RD$500 in 2025). In practice it takes a whole day, 8 to 10 hours door to door.

The other way is to reach Sabana de la Mar by guagua (changing in Higüey or El Seibo and Hato Mayor) and cross the bay by boat to Samaná, about an hour on the water. Travellers on forums describe irregular schedules, basic boats and cancellations in bad weather; don't rely on it if you have a flight or a booking you can't move.

There is no direct bus on this route.

Other options

Domestic flights between Punta Cana and El Catey (AZS) exist only as charters or private light aircraft, costing hundreds to thousands of dollars depending on the plane. A rental car works if you'll explore the peninsula, but dropping it in another province usually costs extra. A third way is driving or taking a transfer to Sabana de la Mar (about 2.5 to 3 hours along the Miches coast) and crossing by boat, but only with time to spare and good weather.

Tips

  • If you're still planning, consider flying into Punta Cana and out of SDQ or El Catey so you don't repeat the trip.
  • Leave Bávaro before 9 am to reach Samaná in daylight.
  • Check whether the transfer price is to Samaná town, Las Terrenas or Las Galeras: distance and price differ a lot.
  • Don't rely on the Sabana de la Mar boat in the rainy season or in rough seas.
