Samaná

Samaná town (Santa Bárbara de Samaná) is about 40 km from El Catey International Airport (AZS), 40 to 50 minutes, and about 170 km from Las Américas (SDQ), 2.5 to 3 hours. It is the provincial capital, with a Malecón on the bay, a cruise port, the boats to Cayo Levantado and, from January to March, humpback whale-watching trips.

As with Las Terrenas, El Catey is the closest and Santo Domingo has the most flights. Here you can also arrive by direct bus from the capital.

Which airport to fly into

If you find a flight to El Catey (AZS), Samaná town is 40 to 50 minutes east along the bay road through Sánchez. AZS has few routes, several in winter, which matches whale season.

Most people arrive through Santo Domingo (SDQ): 2.5 to 3 hours on the Autopista del Nordeste, with tolls (a February 2026 report put round-trip tolls toward Samaná at around RD$900 for a car). Caribe Tours runs direct buses from Santo Domingo to Samaná several times a day, about 3 hours, a cheap option if you are not carrying much luggage. From Punta Cana (PUJ), the shortest way is usually by road to Sabana de la Mar and the ferry across the bay; overland, around through the interior, it is 4 to 5 hours.

Areas and transfer times

Central Samaná, by the Malecón, is the most practical area for whale trips and Cayo Levantado: 40 to 50 minutes from AZS. West of the center, the Puerto Bahía marina area has hotels and apartments on the bay, a few minutes closer to the airport. To the east, toward Los Cacaos, there are large resorts overlooking Cayo Levantado, 5 to 15 minutes from the center.

Las Galeras, about 28 km northeast, and Las Terrenas, on the other side of the peninsula, are separate destinations with their own pages.

Getting around

There is no Uber in Samaná. The Malecón, the port and the center are walkable. For everything else, fixed-fare taxis and motoconchos; agree the price before you get in.

Guaguas leave from the municipal market for Las Galeras (just under an hour), for El Limón and Las Terrenas, and for Sánchez. Boats to Cayo Levantado and whale-watching trips leave from the Malecón pier. To reach the El Limón waterfall, Playa Rincón or the viewpoints on your own, a rental car helps; the peninsula's mountain roads are narrow and best avoided at night.

Tips

  • For whale watching (January to March), book your stay early: it is Samaná's high season.
  • If you take Caribe Tours, buy your ticket at the terminal in advance on long weekends.
  • Confirm the Sabana de la Mar to Samaná ferry schedule the day before; it depends on the weather.
  • Carry cash in pesos: many taxis and boats do not take cards.
