Gregorio Luperón International Airport

The north coast airport: 10 minutes to Sosúa, 20 to 25 minutes to Cabarete and Playa Dorada, fixed taxi prices and Uber available.

Gregorio Luperón International Airport

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), known as Puerto Plata airport, actually sits next to Sosúa: about 10 minutes from central Sosúa, 20 to 25 minutes from Cabarete and about 20 to 25 minutes from Playa Dorada and Puerto Plata city. In 2026 a taxi cost around US$25 to Sosúa and US$30 to US$35 to Cabarete or Playa Dorada, per car.

Aerodom runs it, and it is the country's fourth airport by passengers. Flights come from Canada (Air Canada, Air Transat, WestJet), the United States (American, JetBlue, Delta, United) and Europe, with far more traffic from November to April. Off season there are fewer flights and fewer taxis waiting, which matters if you land on a late flight.

After landing

Fill in the E-Ticket before you fly. After immigration, baggage claim and customs you come out into an arrivals hall with tour operator and car rental desks. Package holiday reps wait at those desks or just outside by the coaches. Private transfer drivers wait at the exit with signs. Recent guides suggest asking for a taxi at the dispatch kiosk in the hall before walking to the taxi line.

Taxis

Airport taxis have no meters and charge per car, at a price agreed before you leave. The figures that recur in recent guides are around US$25 to Sosúa, US$30 to US$35 to Cabarete, about US$30 to Playa Dorada and US$40 to US$45 to Cofresí. Farther out, to Río San Juan or Punta Rucia, prices reach three figures and booking ahead makes sense.

Some drivers quote per person; always confirm it is per car. Payment is in cash, US dollars or pesos. No public buses enter the terminal; guaguas (local minibuses) run along the main road, a walk with bags we don't recommend.

Uber and ride apps

Uber operates around Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, and its official POP page says you can request a pickup at the airport with UberX and other options. It usually costs less than a taxi. On late or off-season flights there may be few drivers nearby, and residents' forums report some drivers trying to renegotiate the fare; if that happens, cancel through the app. We have no verified information on inDrive at the airport.

Terminals

There is a single passenger terminal with a satellite pier and a front pier. Some gates have jet bridges and at others you walk down stairs. Arrivals and departures share one building, so there is no way to end up at the wrong terminal: everyone exits through the same arrivals area.

Practical details

Money: US dollars work for the taxi and tips. We could not confirm ATMs in arrivals for 2026; Sosúa and Cabarete have bank ATMs a few minutes away.

Phone: an eSIM or roaming plan is the easy option. Sosúa, Cabarete and Puerto Plata have Claro and Altice stores.

Late arrivals: some flights land in the evening. With a booked transfer the driver waits even if the flight is late; with a taxi there may be few cars left if you're among the last out.

Tips

  • Confirm the taxi price is per car, not per person.
  • For Sosúa the ride is so short that a taxi or Uber almost always beats a booked transfer.
  • For Río San Juan or Punta Rucia, book ahead: they are one to two hours by road.
  • Off season (May to October) there are fewer flights and fewer taxis waiting; have a plan if you land late.
