If you're going on to Playa Grande or Cabrera, add 10 to 20 minutes and roughly US$10 to US$25. For night arrivals, factor in a surcharge and the fact that it's a rural road.

The drive

The route follows Highway 5 east: Sosúa, Cabarete, then Sabaneta de Yásica and Gaspar Hernández. After Cabarete traffic thins and the road becomes two lanes, with curves near the sea, small villages and motoconchos and livestock crossing. The Grand Bahia Principe San Juan sits at kilometer 18 of the Gaspar Hernández to Río San Juan road, a few minutes before town.

The road is paved but has speed bumps at every community and some potholes after heavy rain. By day it's a pleasant drive; at night there are unlit stretches and it's better to go with a driver who knows the road than to drive yourself.

Which option suits you

Private transfer: the best choice for nearly everyone. The price is fixed, the driver tracks your flight and you don't depend on finding a taxi willing to drive 70 km and come back empty.

Resort transfer: if you're staying at the Grand Bahia Principe San Juan, ask whether it offers one; tour operator packages often include it.

Airport taxi: possible, but agree the price before getting in and make sure the driver knows your hotel.

Uber: we don't recommend it here. Even if the app shows a price, finding a driver to accept such a long trip is hard, and for the return from Río San Juan there are almost no cars.

Rental car: a good idea if you want to explore Playa Grande, Playa Preciosa and Cabrera, but pick it up at the airport and drive in daylight.

Guagua: coastal guaguas link Puerto Plata, Sosúa, Cabarete and Río San Juan with changes and many stops; only for light packers with time to spare.

Tips

  • Book before you fly: on this route a reservation saves haggling at the rank and guarantees a car if you land late.
  • If you land after 7 pm, a driver who knows the road beats driving an unfamiliar rental car.
  • For the return, leave Río San Juan about 4 hours before an international flight.
  • If you're heading on to Playa Grande or Cabrera, say so when booking: the price changes.
