Distance9 km
Drive time10 to 20 min
Private carUS$25 to US$45

Sosúa is about 9 km east of Gregorio Luperón Airport (POP), a 10 to 20 minute drive. The airport taxi charges around US$20 to US$30 per car in 2026, and a pre-booked private transfer costs about US$25 to US$45.

It is so close that a delayed flight costs the driver little time, which is why Sosúa is a favorite base for people who fly in and out of the north coast often. Town splits into two sides of the bay: El Batey, with most hotels, restaurants and Sosúa Beach, and Los Charamicos, which is more local. There are also residential areas on the hills toward the highway, so keep the exact address handy if you're staying in a villa or apartment.

Approximate 2026 prices, one way, per vehicle. The taxi is a flat airport fare paid in cash. We don't list a shared price because few operators sell one for such a short hop and the saving over a taxi is minimal. Some companies may add a night surcharge after 10 pm.

One-way prices, approximate, based on posted fares and 2025 and 2026 quotes. Confirm the final price before you book.

The drive

You leave the airport onto Highway 5 and turn east. Within minutes you reach Sosúa's entrance via Avenida Pedro Clisante or the highway turnoffs into El Batey. The stretch is urban: traffic lights, motoconchos, guaguas (public minibuses) stopping wherever there are passengers, and the odd speed bump.

El Batey's streets are narrow and some are one-way, so the last 500 meters to your hotel can be the slowest. In high season and on weekend nights there is traffic around the bar strip on Pedro Clisante.

Which option suits you

Taxi: for Sosúa it's the obvious choice. The drive is short, the flat fare is low and the rank is right outside arrivals.

Private transfer: useful for late arrivals, families with kids or villas in the hills whose addresses are hard to find; the driver confirms the location beforehand.

Uber or inDrive: both apps operate around Puerto Plata and Sosúa according to their own pages and recent guides, and the ride is usually cheaper than a taxi. Agree the pickup point in the app (normally the parking area) and be ready to pay cash if the driver asks.

Guagua: public minibuses run along Highway 5 about 200 to 300 meters from the terminal and charge around RD$50 to RD$100 (under US$2). Only for light packers in daylight.

Rental car: El Batey is walkable; rent only if you plan day trips.

Tips

  • If you're staying in El Batey, ask to be dropped at your hotel's door: some streets are one-way and walking with bags is awkward.
  • For the return, 20 minutes is plenty of driving time, but in high season the security line at POP can be long.
  • Keep pesos handy: Sosúa's local taxi stands also work in cash for getting around.
  • If you've rented a villa in the hills, send the location to your driver on WhatsApp before you land.
