Getting to Sosúa

10 to 15 minutes from Puerto Plata Airport: the beach town closest to POP

Sosúa

Sosúa is about 7 km from Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP), 10 to 15 minutes by car: the airport sits practically on the edge of town. It is a bay with a sheltered beach, shore diving and a center of bars and restaurants in El Batey.

It is one of the shortest transfers in the country. Santiago (STI) is the alternative if it has a better flight, about 80 to 110 minutes away.

Which airport to fly into

Fly into Puerto Plata (POP). From the airport to El Batey or Sosúa beach is about 10 to 15 minutes on the coast road, with no tolls. Playa Alicia and the hotels on the Los Charamicos side are about the same.

Santiago (STI) has more frequencies from New York, Miami and other US cities. The drive is about 80 to 110 minutes on the mountain road to Puerto Plata and then east along the coast. Weigh the flight savings against the cost of a long transfer.

Getting around

El Batey, central Sosúa, is walkable: the beach, Calle Pedro Clisante with its bars and restaurants, and most hotels are a few blocks apart. Los Charamicos, across the bay, is the more local neighborhood.

Uber coverage in Sosúa is less reliable than in Puerto Plata; sometimes cars come over from the city. Taxis at the town stand charge fixed fares, and carros públicos and guaguas pass frequently along the coast road to Puerto Plata and Cabarete during the day. Motoconchos are the fastest local option; for night trips, take a taxi.

Tips

  • With such a short transfer, a taxi from the airport line is usually enough; confirm the price first.
  • For Cabarete at night, take a taxi; guaguas thin out after dark.
  • If you rent a villa outside the center, a rental car saves a lot of taxi fares.
  • Carry pesos for guaguas and motoconchos.
