Cruise ships in Samaná don't dock at a pier: they anchor in the bay and tender passengers to the waterfront pier in Santa Bárbara de Samaná. Some ships tender passengers straight to Cayo Levantado, an island about 7 km from town. The nearest airport, Samaná El Catey (AZS), is about 45 km away, 45 to 65 minutes.

The peninsula's best-known trips leave from town: Cayo Levantado, El Limón waterfall, Los Haitises National Park and, January to March, humpback whale watching in the bay. Las Galeras and Playa Rincón are farther, 35 to 60 minutes by road.

Getting off the ship

Tenders drop you at the pier on the malecón (waterfront), right in the centre. Taxis, motoconchos (motorbike taxis) and excursion sellers wait right there. Taxis have no meters and charge per vehicle: agree the price, destination and return time before setting off. Fares posted in forums are old, so treat them only as a guide and ask several drivers.

The waterfront and town centre are walkable: restaurants, the footbridge to the islets and the market are a few minutes apart. Playa Cayacoa is about a 15 to 20 minute walk or 5 minutes by taxi.

For Cayo Levantado, boats leave from the same pier. Guides quote very different prices, from around RD$250 per person round trip up to packages of about US$28 per person with a tour operator; only the western part of the island is a public beach, the rest belongs to a resort.

Airport transfers

Samaná is a port of call, not an embarkation port, so few passengers need the airport. If you do, Samaná El Catey (AZS) is about 45 km away on the bay road, 45 to 65 minutes; a private transfer costs around US$75 to US$110 per vehicle in 2026. AZS has flights mostly in winter, to Canada and Paris.

For year-round flights to the US or Europe, the option is Santo Domingo (SDQ), about 2.5 to 3 hours away on the Autopista del Nordeste, with tolls; a private transfer costs around US$150 to US$200. Puerto Plata (POP) is about 3 to 3.5 hours away.

Tips

  • Note the time of the last tender to the ship and be back at the pier at least 30 minutes earlier; in choppy seas tenders run slower.
  • For El Limón, the last stretch is on horseback or on foot along a trail that can be muddy: wear shoes that can get wet.
  • January to March, book whale watching early in the day; the trips take several hours.
  • Bring cash in pesos: boatmen, motoconchos and colmados (corner shops) rarely take cards.
