Samaná El Catey Airport (AZS) is about 70 km from Las Galeras, a drive of 75 to 95 minutes. A private transfer costs around US$100 to US$140 in 2026 and a rank taxi around US$90 to US$130.

Las Galeras is a small village at the end of the road, on the far north-east tip of the peninsula. It's the base for Playa Rincón, Playa Frontón, Madama and the Boca del Diablo blowhole, and it has mostly small hotels, guesthouses and villas, plus one or two all-inclusives.

Since AZS flights are almost all winter services, many people heading to Las Galeras come through Santo Domingo (SDQ), about 3 to 3.5 hours away. If you can get a flight into El Catey, you save nearly two hours on the road.

Tolls

None on the bay road via Sánchez and Samaná.

The drive

The first part matches the Samaná route: the bay road through Sánchez, about 45 km past villages and coconut groves. At Samaná you skirt the town and take the road north, about 27 km of climbs, bends and descents through green hills until you reach the sea at Las Galeras.

That last stretch is paved but slow, with blind bends and motoconchos (motorbike taxis) pulling out of side tracks. Arriving in daylight is much better: the mountain section has little lighting and, in rain, water runs across the road. If your villa is on a dirt track, tell the driver; some low cars can't get in.

Which option suits you

On a near 90-minute route that ends on a mountain road, a pre-booked private transfer is the sensible choice: a fixed price, a driver who knows the Las Galeras tracks, and no reliance on free taxis when you land. The rank taxi is possible, but the fare is negotiated, so settle it before leaving the airport.

Shared transfers barely exist to Las Galeras because few passengers per flight are heading there; some hotels arrange them. For groups of 5 to 10, a private van works out cheaper per head.

Uber isn't an option. Guaguas (public minibuses) link Samaná with Las Galeras but don't reach the airport. A rental car gives you freedom to reach Playa Rincón and Frontón, though many visitors get around by boat or motoconcho from the village.

Tips

  • Try to arrive before dark: the mountain stretch between Samaná and Las Galeras is slow and unlit.
  • If you're staying at a villa on a dirt track, send the driver the exact location before the trip.
  • Bring cash in pesos: Las Galeras has few ATMs and the colmados (corner shops) rarely take cards.
  • For Playa Rincón, many boats leave from the village beach; ask your hotel for the day's price.
