Getting to Las Galeras

1 to 1.25 hours from El Catey Airport: the end of the road on the Samaná Peninsula

Las Galeras

Las Galeras is about 68 km from El Catey International Airport (AZS), 1 to 1.25 hours by car, and about 28 km from Samaná town. From Santo Domingo (SDQ) it is about 195 km and 3 to 3.5 hours. It is a small village at the northeastern tip of the peninsula and the base for Playa Rincón, Playa Frontón and Playa Madama.

Of the destinations in this guide, it has the longest transfer from an airport with good flight options. Arrive in daylight and know how you will get around, because local transport is basic.

Which airport to fly into

If there is a flight to El Catey (AZS), it is the best option: about 68 km and 1 to 1.25 hours, through Sánchez and Samaná town and then north on the road to Las Galeras.

From Santo Domingo (SDQ) it is 3 to 3.5 hours on the Autopista del Nordeste and the Samaná road, with tolls. By bus, Caribe Tours goes as far as Samaná town, and from there guaguas leave the market for Las Galeras, just under an hour. With an afternoon arrival at SDQ, consider a night in Santo Domingo and leaving in the morning so you do not drive the final hilly stretch after dark.

Areas and transfer times

The village center, between the main street and the beach, has guesthouses and small hotels steps from the boats, 1 to 1.25 hours from AZS. There is also an all-inclusive resort on the village beach. Toward the outskirts, on the road to Playa Rincón and in the hills, there are villas and eco-lodges with views, 5 to 15 minutes from the center on roads that are sometimes unpaved.

The airport transfer barely differs between areas. What changes is how much you rely on transport: in the center you do not need it, on the outskirts you do.

Getting around

There is no Uber in Las Galeras. The village is small and walkable: the main street ends at the beach, where the boats leave. Motoconchos are the most common local transport and there are a few taxis; agree the price first.

For Playa Frontón and Playa Madama, the practical way is by boat from the village beach; for Playa Rincón there are boats too, or it is 20 to 30 minutes by road. Guaguas to Samaná leave from the main street during the day. To explore the peninsula (Rincón, El Limón, Las Terrenas) at your own pace, a rental car with good clearance is the most comfortable option; rent it at the airport, because choice in the village is limited.

Tips

  • Arrive with enough cash: Las Galeras has few ATMs and many services take pesos only.
  • Agree the price and return time with the boatman before heading to Frontón or Rincón.
  • Avoid driving between Samaná and Las Galeras at night: curves, little lighting and animals on the road.
  • In whale season, the trips leave from Samaná, about 40 minutes away.
