Jarabacoa is about 62 km from Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago, 1 to 1.25 hours by car. From Santo Domingo (SDQ) it is about 175 km and 2.5 to 3 hours. It is a mountain town in the Cordillera Central, around 500 meters up, known for its rivers, waterfalls, rafting and the climb to Pico Duarte.

If your flight lands at Cibao (STI), it is the shortest option: about 35 km south on the Autopista Duarte to La Vega and then about 27 km of paved, winding mountain road to Jarabacoa. In all, 1 to 1.25 hours.
From Santo Domingo (SDQ) you cross the capital and head up the Autopista Duarte, with tolls, to La Vega: 2.5 to 3 hours, more at rush hour. Caribe Tours runs buses from Santo Domingo to Jarabacoa, a cheap option if you are not carrying much luggage.
Transfer routes to Jarabacoa
Areas and transfer times
Central Jarabacoa has small hotels and everything within walking distance, 1 to 1.25 hours from STI. On the outskirts, along the roads toward La Confluencia, Pinar Quemado and the hills, there are mountain hotels, cabins and villas with views, 5 to 20 minutes from town, and for almost all of them you need a car. Manabao, higher up on the way to Pico Duarte, is about 30 to 45 minutes from town on a narrower road.
From the airport, the transfer changes little between the center and the nearby outskirts; where time adds up is at hillside cabins and in Manabao, especially if the last stretch is unpaved.

Getting around
There is no Uber in Jarabacoa. The town center is walkable, with the park, colmados (corner shops), restaurants and the bus terminal a few blocks apart. For everything else there are motoconchos, the main local transport, and a few taxis; agree the price first.
Guaguas link Jarabacoa with La Vega frequently during the day, and from La Vega buses run to Santiago and Santo Domingo. Rafting, waterfall and Pico Duarte trips usually include hotel pickup. To reach waterfalls such as Baiguate or Jimenoa on your own, or to go up to Manabao, a rental car or a taxi for the day is the most comfortable; some roads are unpaved and need good clearance.
Tips
- If your cabin is up in the hills, ask the host whether the road suits a regular car.
- Bring a light jacket: nights are much cooler than on the coast.
- Avoid the La Vega to Jarabacoa road at night and in heavy rain.
- If you want a beach, the nearest is Puerto Plata, 2 to 2.5 hours via Santiago.
