STI is the closest international airport to Jarabacoa, far closer than Santo Domingo, which is more than two hours away. Jarabacoa sits at about 500 meters among rivers and pine forest and is the base for rafting on the Yaque del Norte, the Jimenoa and Baiguate waterfalls and the climb up Pico Duarte. Many places to stay are cabins or villas in the hills rather than in town, and some access roads are steep or unpaved.

Approximate 2026 prices, one way, per vehicle. We found no published STI taxi fare to Jarabacoa; the range is an estimate and should be negotiated. Hotels in the hills outside town may cost more because of the steep access roads. Friday afternoons and Sundays bring heavier traffic and some drivers adjust the price.

The drive

From the airport you take the Autopista Duarte south toward La Vega. It's a wide highway with heavy truck and guagua traffic and gas stations and businesses along both sides. At La Vega you take the road to Jarabacoa (the Federico Basilis), about 25 km of winding climb from the Cibao plain into the pines. That last stretch takes 25 to 35 minutes.

The mountain road is paved and generally in good condition, but it has tight bends, slow trucks and occasional fog at dusk. On Friday afternoons many families from Santiago and Santo Domingo drive up, and on Sunday afternoons they come down; at those times the trip runs longer. If you're staying up a hill road such as Jamaca de Dios or toward Manabao, add 10 to 20 minutes.

Which option suits you

Private transfer: the most practical choice. The driver will know how to reach cabins outside town and can bring a higher-clearance vehicle if the access road is unpaved. Ask your lodging too; many ranches coordinate transfers.

Airport taxi: works if you agree the price before leaving. Not every STI taxi knows the Jarabacoa hills.

Uber: you can request UberX from STI and sometimes a driver accepts, but an hour-plus trip out of Santiago isn't always picked up, and few cars are available for the return from Jarabacoa. Don't count on it.

Bus: Caribe Tours runs between Santo Domingo and Jarabacoa; from Santiago the usual approach is via La Vega. You'd first need to get from the airport to a terminal, so it only pays off if you travel very light.

Rental car: a good option if you'll move between waterfalls, rivers and mountain restaurants. An SUV helps on the hill roads.

Tips

  • If your cabin is up a hill, ask whether the road is unpaved and whether you need a 4x4 or high-clearance vehicle.
  • Bring a light jacket: at night Jarabacoa is much cooler than Santiago.
  • Avoid driving down on Sunday afternoon if you fly that night; traffic toward La Vega builds up.
  • For the return, leave Jarabacoa about 3.5 hours before an international flight.
