Cibao International Airport (STI) is about 17 km southeast of downtown Santiago de los Caballeros, a 20 to 35 minute drive. In 2026 the airport taxi charges around US$25 to US$35 (RD$1,500 to RD$2,100) and an UberX usually costs RD$800 to RD$1,000, about US$13 to US$16.

Santiago is a city, not a beach destination, and you can tell at the airport: many passengers are Dominicans living in New York, New Jersey or Miami coming to see family. That's why arrivals is crowded with people waiting and late flights from JFK and Newark land full. Hotels are spread between the historic center, the Los Jardines area and the Juan Pablo Duarte and Estrella Sadhalá avenues, so travel time depends on where you're going.

Tolls

None on the usual route into the city.

The drive

From the airport you take the access road to the Autopista Duarte and enter Santiago from the east. It's a multi-lane highway with truck and guagua traffic, then city avenues with traffic lights. The Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration, on the high ground in the city, is the landmark you'll see as you near the center.

Rush hours are 7 to 9 am and 5 to 7 pm, when the drive can top 35 minutes. Many flights from the United States land late at night; at that hour the trip drops to 15 to 25 minutes.

Which option suits you

Uber: at STI it genuinely works. Uber says UberX can be requested any time (not its taxi category) and the app guides you to the pickup point. It's the cheapest option. At night, when several flights land together, a driver can take a while; if 10 minutes pass, head to the taxi rank.

Airport taxi: zone pricing, no meter. Ask the price to your neighborhood (downtown, Los Jardines, Cerros de Gurabo) before getting in.

Private transfer: handy with a large party or lots of luggage, an older traveler, or if you'd rather see a sign with your name than search the crowd.

inDrive: also operates in Santiago, where it launched in the country in 2019. You negotiate the fare in the app.

Rental car: Santiago traffic is heavy; rent only if you'll leave the city.

  • If you use Uber, follow the app's pickup directions; don't wait on the taxi curb.
  • Arrivals fills with families; agree a specific meeting point with your driver.
  • Withdraw pesos at a terminal ATM: almost everything in the city is paid in pesos.
  • Camp David Ranch is in the hills above the city; add 10 to 15 minutes and a steep climb.
