Getting to Miches

1.5 to 2 hours from Punta Cana Airport: new resorts on a still rural coast

Miches

The Miches resorts, on what is marketed as the Costa Esmeralda, are about 100 to 130 km from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ): 1.5 to 2 hours by car depending on the hotel. Miches town sits a little farther west. It is a coast of long beaches, lagoons and hills, with a few big hotels and a lot of countryside in between.

There is no commercial airport in Miches, so the transfer is part of the trip. Arrive in daylight with your transport sorted.

Nearby airports

AirportsDistanceDrive time
PUJ · Punta Cana Airport 110 km 1 h 30 min to 2 h The most practical. The route runs north through Bávaro and Uvero Alto or inland, depending on road conditions.
SDQ · Las Américas Airport 175 km 2 h 30 min to 3 h 20 min More flights, but 2.5 to 3.5 hours inland (via Hato Mayor or El Seibo).

Which airport to fly into

Fly into Punta Cana (PUJ). It has the most flights and the transfer to the Miches resorts takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Route calculators give 100 to 140 km depending on the exact point and road: the coastal road through Bávaro, Uvero Alto and Miches (about 72 km opened by the public works ministry) shortens the trip, while the inland alternative runs via Higüey or El Seibo. Your driver will pick based on road conditions.

The price reflects the distance: a January 2026 guide quoted around US$125 for a one-way private transfer from PUJ to the Costa Esmeralda resorts. Santo Domingo (SDQ) has more flights from South America and Europe, but the drive is longer (2.5 to 3.5 hours) and on two-lane roads for the last stretch. From Samaná there is the Samaná to Sabana de la Mar ferry and then the road to Miches, useful for combining destinations, not as an airport arrival.

Areas and transfer times

The big Costa Esmeralda resorts are east of Miches town, on beaches such as Esmeralda; they are the closest to PUJ via the coast, around 1.5 hours. Miches town and its small guesthouses are a few minutes farther west, with more local life but fewer visitor services. Playa Limón and Laguna Redonda lie between Uvero Alto and Miches, with rustic lodgings about 75 to 90 minutes from the airport.

Sabana de la Mar, farther west, is a different case: it is the ferry port for Samaná, about an hour from Miches town.

Getting around

Uber barely exists in Miches: 2026 guides list it among areas with very limited or no coverage. The resorts arrange taxis and excursions, and in town there are motoconchos and a few local taxis for short trips, price agreed in advance.

Buses and guaguas link Miches with El Seibo, Higüey and Santo Domingo, and a service from the Sitrabapu terminal in Bávaro has been reported several times a day; schedules change, so confirm at the terminal the day before. To visit Playa Limón, Montaña Redonda or the lagoons on your own, a rental car is the most comfortable option. The coastal road is paved but two-lane and unlit in many stretches: avoid driving it at night.

Tips

  • Time your flight to land before mid-afternoon so you drive in daylight.
  • Ask the resort whether the transfer is included: several offer or arrange it.
  • Do not count on Uber even to leave the hotel; save the WhatsApp of the taxi the front desk recommends.
  • Fill the tank before leaving Higüey or Bávaro if you are driving yourself.
