From Punta Cana Airport to the Playa Esmeralda hotels in Miches is about 105 km, a drive of 1 hour 25 minutes to almost 2 hours depending on the route and the hotel. A private transfer costs around US$120 to US$170 per vehicle in 2026. It is the airport's longest run along the east coast and the only one on this list where a shared shuttle practically doesn't exist.
Miches is the east coast's newest resort area: Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Zemi Miches (Hilton), Viva Miches, Sunrise Beach Resort and the new Secrets and Dreams Playa Esmeralda, with a Four Seasons under construction. These hotels are far from everything, on a calm bay, for people who want seclusion. That makes the airport transfer part of the trip, not an errand.

Approximate 2026 prices, one way, per vehicle, to the Playa Esmeralda hotels. We found no published official taxi fare for Miches, so ask at the desk before you get in. Regular shared shuttles barely exist. A round trip is usually double; some Miches hotels sell their own transfer.

Tolls
There are no tolls on the coastal route via Uvero Alto. If the driver goes inland (Higüey and El Seibo), we found no tolls on that route either.
The drive
The usual route runs up the Boulevard Turístico del Este to Uvero Alto and continues on the Uvero Alto to Miches coastal road, opened in 2014, through Nisibón and rural communities. These are two-lane roads with little traffic, rice fields, cattle, rivers and green hills. It is the prettiest part of the trip and also the slowest: villages, speed bumps and animals on the road.
Since April 2026 the Ministry of Tourism has been rebuilding 9.2 km of road between Nisibón and Uvero Alto. While work continues there may be detours or slow stretches; some drivers prefer the inland route through Higüey and El Seibo, longer in kilometers but sometimes similar in time.
At night this route has little lighting and few services. If your flight lands late, seriously consider spending the first night in Bávaro or Uvero Alto and continuing by daylight.
Which option suits you
Book a private transfer ahead. At this distance the official taxi has no published fare we could verify and its price can vary; a booked transfer at US$120 to US$170 gives you a fixed price, a driver waiting and flight tracking. Ask your hotel too: several Miches hotels offer their own transfer, sometimes in a van shared among guests of that hotel.
Uber is not realistic here: few drivers accept trips over an hour and a ride back from Miches is hard to find. There is a guagua (public bus) from the Sitrabapu station in Bávaro to Miches a few times a day, but it only makes sense with light luggage and some Spanish, and you have to reach Bávaro first.
A rental car makes more sense here than in Bávaro if you want to explore Montaña Redonda, Playa Esmeralda or Laguna Redonda, but drive in daylight. One more option: if you're coming from Santo Domingo, Miches can also be reached from Las Américas Airport (SDQ), though the drive is longer.

Tips
- Try to fly in on a flight landing before 3:00 p.m. so you drive the route in daylight.
- Bring water and a snack: there are few places to stop after Uvero Alto.
- Ask your hotel whether it offers a transfer before booking one yourself.
- If you're traveling as a group, a private van splits the cost and is cheaper per person than two cars.
