Getting to Bayahíbe

20 to 30 minutes from La Romana Airport and an hour from Punta Cana: which one suits you

Bayahíbe

Bayahíbe is about 20 km from La Romana International Airport (LRM), 20 to 30 minutes by car, and about 70 km from Punta Cana (PUJ), 60 to 75 minutes. Santo Domingo (SDQ) is 1.5 to 2 hours away. It is a fishing village turned base for Saona Island trips, with resorts along the coast to Dominicus.

La Romana is the closest airport, but PUJ has far more flights. For most travelers the real choice is a direct flight into PUJ plus an hour on the road, or a connection that lands you 20 minutes away.

Which airport to fly into

If you can find a flight to La Romana (LRM), it is the easiest arrival: about 20 minutes on the road from La Romana to Bayahíbe. The catch is supply; LRM has few routes, several only in winter. That is why most people fly into Punta Cana (PUJ) and drive 60 to 75 minutes on the Autovía del Coral, a fast four-lane toll road; transfers usually include the tolls.

Santo Domingo (SDQ) is the third option: 1.5 to 2 hours on the Autovía del Este, past San Pedro de Macorís and La Romana. It pays off if you are coming from South America, if the flight is much cheaper or if you are spending a few days in the capital. A February 2026 report put round-trip tolls for a car between Santo Domingo and the east at around RD$800 to RD$1,000.

Between the highway and the village there are more large resorts with their own beach, about 15 to 20 minutes from LRM.

Getting around

Bayahíbe village is walkable: the excursion pier, the public beach, colmados (corner shops) and restaurants are a few blocks apart. To get to Dominicus, about 2 to 3 km away, there are local taxis and motoconchos (motorbike taxis); agree the price first.

Uber coverage in Bayahíbe is limited and inconsistent according to 2026 guides: sometimes a car shows up, sometimes not. Do not rely on it to make an excursion or a flight. Saona and Catalina trips usually pick up at your hotel. Guaguas leave for La Romana from the village entrance, handy for shopping or the bus terminal, and frequent buses run from La Romana to Santo Domingo. A rental car helps if you want to visit Altos de Chavón, the Cueva de las Maravillas or Parque Nacional del Este on your own.

Tips

  • Compare the total cost: a pricier flight into LRM can pay off if it saves an hour of transfer per person.
  • If you fly into PUJ, private transfers usually include the Autovía del Coral tolls; confirm it.
  • For early excursions, ask the operator to pick you up at the hotel rather than hunting for a taxi at 7 a.m.
  • Save a village taxi driver's WhatsApp: Uber is not reliable here.
