Distance22 km
Drive time20 to 35 min
Private carUS$40 to US$60

La Romana Airport (LRM) is about 22 km from Bayahíbe, a drive of 20 to 35 minutes depending on whether you're going to the village or to the Dominicus beach resorts. A private transfer costs around US$40 to US$60 in 2026 and a taxi from the rank around US$35 to US$55. From Punta Cana (PUJ) the same trip takes 60 to 75 minutes, so if you can find a flight into LRM you save almost an hour.

Bayahíbe is a fishing village that became the departure point for trips to Saona Island and Parque Nacional del Este. Next to it is Dominicus, a strip of all-inclusive resorts (Iberostar, Viva, Catalonia, Dreams and others) on a calm-water beach.

Most flights into LRM are seasonal winter services from Canada and Europe, plus American Airlines from Miami. If your package includes a charter flight, the resort transfer is very likely included too.

Approximate 2026 prices. Taxi, private and van are per vehicle, one way; shared is per person and usually comes bundled with tour-operator packages. The Dominicus resorts are a few minutes past Bayahíbe village and sometimes cost a little more. A round trip is roughly double. Some companies add a surcharge for early-morning arrivals.

One-way prices, approximate, based on posted fares and 2025 and 2026 quotes. Confirm the final price before you book.

Tolls

Usually none on the coastal road. If the driver uses the Autovía del Coral, the trip may pass the Coral 1 toll (around RD$100, about US$1.60, since January 2025); on a transfer it's already in the price.

The drive

From the airport you head east around Casa de Campo and pick up the road to Bayahíbe through Central Romana's sugar cane fields. It's a two-lane road in good condition with little traffic outside hotel shift changes. At the Bayahíbe junction the road splits: right for the village and the excursion pier, straight on for the Dominicus resorts.

In daylight it's an easy run. At night some stretches are unlit and you can meet motorbikes without lights, so a driver who knows the road is a better idea than driving yourself straight off a flight. On Sunday afternoons and during Semana Santa (Easter week) the village fills with Dominican day-trippers and the last stretch can be slow.

Which option suits you

If you're on a charter package, check your voucher: a shared resort transfer is usually included and is the cheapest option. If you're travelling independently, a pre-booked private transfer costs about the same as the rank taxi and waits for you with a name sign, which helps because LRM is small and taxis run out when a full flight lands.

For families or groups of 5 or more, a private van runs around US$60 to US$90 in total, less per head than two taxis. The rank taxi is fine if you land in daylight with light bags; agree the price and the exact destination (village or resort) before you get in.

Uber and inDrive aren't a reliable option at LRM or in Bayahíbe. A rental car makes sense if you're staying in the village and want to explore the region (Altos de Chavón, La Romana, Higüey), but not if you're at a Dominicus all-inclusive.

Tips

  • Say whether you're going to Bayahíbe village or Dominicus: it's only 5 minutes apart, but some drivers price them differently.
  • If you have a Saona trip the next day, most leave from the Bayahíbe pier and pick up at the Dominicus resorts.
  • Carry pesos for tips and for the village colmado (the Dominican corner shop); the resorts take dollars.
  • If there's no flight into LRM on your dates, PUJ is about 60 to 75 minutes away and SDQ about 2 hours.
