La Romana Airport (LRM) is about 90 km from Bávaro, a 75 to 100 minute drive on the Autovía del Coral. A private transfer costs around US$110 to US$160 in 2026, and the rank taxis tend to ask a bit more, around US$120 to US$170.

This route exists for a practical reason: some charter flights from Canada and Europe land at LRM, and sometimes a flight to La Romana is cheaper or better timed than one to Punta Cana (PUJ). The catch is that Bávaro is 25 to 35 minutes from PUJ and more than an hour from LRM, so before booking, weigh what you save on the flight against the transfer.

If your holiday package puts you into LRM with a hotel in Bávaro, the transfer is usually included and shared: expect stops at other hotels, which can add 30 minutes.

Tolls

On the Autovía del Coral you pass the Coral 1 toll (around RD$100, about US$1.60, since January 2025) and possibly a second booth on the stretch toward Punta Cana. A transfer includes them; if you drive yourself, carry cash in pesos.

The drive

You leave the airport heading east and join the Autovía del Coral, a four-lane highway that runs north of Bayahíbe, crosses the Chavón River and continues toward Higüey. Before Higüey the road swings toward the east coast and enters the Punta Cana area near Verón, where traffic splits off toward Bávaro, Cabeza de Toro and Arena Gorda.

The highway itself usually flows well. Delays come at the end: the Verón area and Avenida Barceló can crawl at rush hour (7 to 9 am and 5 to 7 pm) with hotel staff traffic. At night the highway is quieter but has unlit stretches; if you land late, use a driver.

Which option suits you

A private transfer is the practical choice: with 75 to 100 minutes on the road, going straight to your hotel with no stops is worth it, and the per-vehicle price splits well between 2 or 3 people. For groups of 5 to 10, a private van at around US$150 to US$220 in total is cheaper per head than anything else.

Shared transfers only exist if you're on a tour-operator package; there's no regular shared service for independent travellers from LRM to Bávaro. The rank taxi works, but on a trip this long it's better to book ahead and lock in the price.

Uber isn't a realistic way to leave LRM. A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore the east (Bayahíbe, Altos de Chavón, Higüey) during the trip; the Autovía del Coral is an easy daytime drive.

Tips

  • Before booking a flight into LRM with a hotel in Bávaro, add up the transfer: a private round trip can run US$220 to US$320.
  • If the transfer is part of your package, ask how many hotels the guagua (minibus) stops at before yours.
  • Bring water and a snack: most of the drive is highway with few stops.
  • If you fly home from LRM, leave Bávaro at least three and a half hours before departure to cover the drive and check-in.
