From El Higüero airport (JBQ) to Boca Chica it is about 50 km and 50 to 80 minutes, depending on traffic. In 2026 a taxi cost around US$50 to US$70 per car and a pre-booked private transfer about US$60 to US$85.
Worth knowing before you buy the ticket: JBQ is north of the capital and Boca Chica is to the east, right by the other airport, Las Américas (SDQ), about 10 minutes from the beach. People landing at El Higüero are almost always on an Air Century regional flight or a private flight, and they have to cross or skirt the whole metro area. If your route offers SDQ instead, you save nearly an hour of driving and a fair amount of money.
Reference prices (2026)
| Option | Price |
|---|---|
| Official airport taxi | US$50 to US$70 |
| Private car (1 to 3 people) | US$60 to US$85 |
| Van (up to about 10 people) | US$85 to US$120 |
Approximate 2026 prices, one way, per vehicle. The taxi is the terminal's taxi service, at a price agreed before you get in. The private transfer is a sedan or SUV for 1 to 3 people, booked ahead; the van takes up to about 10 people. A round trip usually costs double. Ask whether the price includes the Autopista Las Américas toll. An Uber usually costs less than the taxi, but on a trip this long the app price climbs sharply at rush hour. There is no regular shared shuttle.

Tolls
You will normally pass one toll booth on the Autopista Las Américas, which has charged cars RD$100 (about US$1.60) since January 2025. Depending on the driver's route there may be another; ask whether the price includes it.
The drive
There are two ways to do it. One skirts the city to the north and east: out toward Avenida Jacobo Majluta, down Avenida Charles de Gaulle and onto the Autopista Las Américas heading east, passing close to SDQ before reaching Boca Chica. The other cuts south through the city, crosses the Ozama River on one of the bridges and follows the Autopista Las Américas along the sea. Drivers choose by current traffic; Waze rules in Santo Domingo.
At the evening rush, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., the eastbound exits from the city back up and the trip can run past 80 minutes. On Friday and Sunday afternoons, when people from the capital head to and from the eastern beaches, the Autopista Las Américas also jams. At night the trip drops to about 40 to 50 minutes.
The Autopista Las Américas is a multi-lane highway in good condition. The turnoff into Boca Chica is short: the town sits just south of the highway and most hotels are a few blocks from the beach, on or near Calle Duarte.
Which option suits you
For a trip of nearly an hour with luggage, a pre-booked private transfer is the most comfortable: fixed price, toll included and a driver who waits even if the flight is late. The gap with the terminal taxi is small, a few dollars.
The terminal taxi works if you didn't book; agree the price and the toll before you get in. Uber can come in cheaper than both, but at rush hour the price rises and some drivers turn down long trips. For groups of five or more, a van is the logical choice.
Renting a car only makes sense if you plan to explore the east coast afterward, such as Juan Dolio, La Romana or Bayahíbe. In Boca Chica you don't need one: the town is walkable and Uber covers trips into the capital.
