From El Higüero airport (JBQ) to the Colonial Zone it is about 21 km and 30 to 45 minutes in normal traffic; at rush hour it can run past an hour. In 2026 a terminal taxi cost around US$25 to US$40 per car, a pre-booked private transfer about US$40 to US$60, and an Uber a good deal less.

This is a cross-town urban trip: you leave the northern edge of Santo Domingo and head down to the historic center by the Ozama River and the Caribbean. It is mostly used by people arriving on Air Century regional flights from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten or Cuba, or on domestic and private flights. The real decision here is less about price than about what time you land: Santo Domingo traffic matters more than distance.

Private car (1 to 3 people)US$40 to US$60

Approximate 2026 prices, one way, per vehicle. The taxi is the terminal's taxi service, at a price agreed before you get in. The private transfer is a sedan or SUV for 1 to 3 people with luggage, booked ahead; the van takes up to about 10 people. A round trip usually costs double, sometimes with a small discount. An Uber costs a good deal less, around RD$700 to RD$1,100 (about US$11 to US$17) by our estimates, and the app adds any night or demand surcharge. There is no regular shared shuttle on this route.

Tolls

On the usual routes, the Autopista Duarte or Avenida Máximo Gómez, there is normally no toll. If the driver takes another expressway they may pass a toll booth; ask beforehand whether the price includes it.

The drive

From El Higüero the driver usually heads for the Autopista Duarte and enters the city along it and Avenida Luperón, or drops down Avenida Máximo Gómez. You pass residential and commercial areas of Santo Domingo Norte, cross the upper part of the Distrito Nacional and reach the Colonial Zone from the south, near the Malecón, or along Avenida Mella on the north side of the district.

Traffic shapes the trip. Between 7 and 9 a.m. and between 5 and 7:30 p.m., Máximo Gómez, 27 de Febrero and the Duarte fill up, and what is 35 minutes midday becomes an hour or more. Friday afternoons and heavy rain are the worst. At night and on Sunday mornings, by contrast, it takes 20 to 30 minutes.

The Colonial Zone has narrow one-way streets and some pedestrian ones, such as El Conde. Many boutique hotels are on streets where a large vehicle can't stop for long; if you have a lot of luggage or a van, ask your hotel for the best drop-off point.

Which option suits you

Uber is the cheapest option and works well on this route: JBQ is inside the metro area and Uber's official page confirms airport pickups. It is the obvious choice for one or two people with normal luggage.

The terminal taxi makes sense if you have no phone data or would rather not wait for a driver; it costs more, but you leave right away. Agree the price first.

A pre-booked private transfer is worth it if you arrive with family, a lot of luggage or on a private flight at an odd hour, or if you want the driver to wait even if the flight is late. For groups of five or more, a van works out cheaper per person than two cars.

Renting a car here rarely pays off: the Colonial Zone has little parking and the capital's traffic is demanding. If you plan to tour the country afterward, pick it up the day you leave the city.

Tips

  • If you land between 5 and 7:30 p.m., allow an hour or more to the Colonial Zone.
  • Request your Uber once you have your bags; drivers are usually nearby.
  • Tell your boutique hotel your arrival time: many are on narrow streets and will tell you where to stop.
  • Don't mix up JBQ and SDQ when booking: Las Américas is to the east and the drive is different.
