From Las Américas to the Zona Colonial is about 30 km on the Autopista Las Américas. Without traffic it takes 30 to 40 minutes; at rush hour it can run past an hour. The official taxi costs around US$35 to US$40 in 2026, an Uber usually lands between US$13 and US$24, and a pre-booked private transfer runs around US$35 to US$60 per car.

The Zona Colonial is the oldest part of Santo Domingo and the trickiest for a driver: narrow one-way streets, pedestrian stretches on Calle El Conde, and boutique hotels in colonial houses with no parking at the door. Give the exact street address, not just the hotel name.

If your flight lands at El Higüero (JBQ) rather than Las Américas, distance and price are different; this page covers SDQ only.

Private transfers are per vehicle for 1 to 3 people, and most quotes include the toll. A round trip is usually double; some companies add a night or waiting surcharge for very late flights. Tolls

One toll: the Autopista Las Américas plaza between the airport and the city. Since January 2025 it costs RD$100 for a car (about US$1.60). Taxis, Uber and private transfers normally include it; if you drive, carry small peso notes or a Paso Rápido tag.

The drive

Leaving the airport you join the Autopista Las Américas heading west, with the Caribbean on your left for much of the way. You pass the toll plaza, the turnoff for Los Tres Ojos National Park, and then cross the Ozama River on one of its bridges. On the far bank you are a few blocks from the colonial city, and drivers come in by the port or along the Malecón seafront avenue.

Traffic is what changes the time. Between about 6:30 and 9:30 in the morning heading into town, and 5:00 to 8:00 in the evening, the highway and bridges jam; Dominican press has reported long queues at the toll and stretches that take an hour from Santo Domingo Este. In heavy rain parts of the highway flood and everything slows. Late at night the run can drop to 25 minutes.

The last 500 meters are the slowest: cobbled streets, cars parked on both sides and some blocks closed to traffic at night or on weekends. It is normal for the driver to drop you at the nearest corner.

Which option suits you

For one or two people with light bags, Uber is the cheapest. Since mid-2025 there are signed pickup zones just outside the terminal, the result of an agreement between Uber, Aerodom (the airport operator) and Sichala. Ignore anyone inside the terminal offering an "Uber"; check the plate in the app. We found no official airport rules for inDrive, so don't count on it when you land.

The official taxi costs more than Uber but holds no surprises: fixed fare, a desk on the arrivals level, open 24 hours. It is the sensible choice if you land late, have no mobile data or travel with kids.

A pre-booked private transfer costs about the same as the taxi and adds a driver waiting with your name, which helps if your hotel is on a pedestrian street and you want help with bags to the door. A shared shuttle (from about US$19 per person) only pays off if you travel alone. Renting a car to stay in the Zona Colonial makes no sense: there is nowhere to park and everything is walkable.

  • Ask your hotel for the exact address and the access street; several Zona Colonial hotels have no car entrance.
  • If you land on a weekday between 5:00 and 8:00 pm, allow 60 minutes or more to your hotel.
  • Carry a few RD$100 and RD$200 notes for tips; there are ATMs in the arrivals hall.
  • If you use Uber, walk to the signed pickup zone and check the plate before you get in.
