Juan Dolio is a strip of roughly 10 km along the sea between Guayacanes and the Los Marlins golf course, with apartment towers, all-inclusive hotels and weekend homes of Santo Domingo families. Unlike Boca Chica, many visitors here stay in rented apartments rather than hotels, which changes how best to arrive and get around.

Tolls

The direct route doesn't pass the Las Américas toll, which is on the city side. We could not confirm whether any plaza on the eastern highway charges before Juan Dolio; if you drive, carry RD$100 to RD$200 in small notes. Transfers and taxis include any toll.

The drive

From the airport you head east on the Autopista Las Américas past Boca Chica and continue on the highway toward San Pedro de Macorís. It is a wide road, two lanes each way, with light traffic outside weekends. There are two ways into Juan Dolio: the highway exits, or the old coast road that runs along the sea past the hotels and towers, slower because of speed bumps and junctions.

Santo Domingo traffic barely affects this trip. The exceptions are Friday afternoons and holidays, when half the capital heads east, and Sunday afternoons in the other direction if you are returning to the airport. At night the highway has poorly lit stretches and motorbikes without lights; professional drivers handle it daily, but if you rent a car, aim to arrive in daylight.

Which option suits you

If your hotel is all-inclusive, ask first whether it offers a transfer; several sell one as an add-on. If not, the fixed-fare official taxi and a private transfer cost about the same, and the private one waits if your flight is late.

Uber can work from the airport pickup zone, though not every driver wants to go to Juan Dolio because the return leg is usually empty. Getting an Uber out of Juan Dolio is less reliable than in the capital, so arrange your ride back to the airport in advance.

If you are staying in an apartment for a week or more, a rental car starts to make sense: Juan Dolio is long and thin, some buildings have few colmados (corner shops) nearby, and the capital is 45 minutes away. For three or four nights at an all-inclusive, you don't need one.

Tips

  • Give the driver the building name and a landmark on the old coast road; Juan Dolio addresses go by landmarks, not numbers.
  • If you rent an apartment, stop at a supermarket on the way; ask for the stop when you book.
  • The run back to the airport on a Sunday afternoon can take longer than usual; leave 30 minutes early.
