Late-Night and Delayed Arrivals in the Dominican Republic (2026)

If you land in the Dominican Republic after 10 p.m., airport taxis and pre-booked private transfers still run at Punta Cana (PUJ) and Santo Domingo (SDQ); shared shuttles mostly do not, and Uber is unreliable at PUJ at any hour. Expect a possible night surcharge of around US$5 to US$10. For delays, most private transfer companies track your flight and wait for free for a set time after landing. For long drives after midnight, consider stopping for the night.

The short answer: Landing late on a short route (PUJ to Bávaro or Cap Cana, POP to Sosúa, SDQ to the city): book a private transfer with flight tracking, or take the official taxi. Landing late on a long route (SDQ to Las Terrenas or Punta Cana, PUJ to Santo Domingo): sleep near the airport and travel in the morning. Do not pick up a rental car and drive at night.

PUJ’s busiest arrival waves are from late morning to early evening, when most flights from North America and Europe land. Later flights still come in, including some European and South American services, and on those nights the stand thins out. SDQ handles more late-night traffic and works around the clock. At smaller airports, assume nothing is waiting for you unless you booked it. Fares at each airport are in our airport taxi fares guide, and the late-night Uber picture is in our Uber at Dominican airports guide.

Before you fly: four things to set up

  1. Complete the e-Ticket. The Dominican Republic requires the free electronic entry and exit form (e-Ticket) from the official migration site. Have the QR code on your phone or printed; without it, you lose time at the counter, which matters more at night when staff are fewer.
  2. Pre-book your ride and send your flight number. A company that knows your flight can track it. Ask how long free waiting lasts after landing and what the extra charge is beyond that.
  3. Tell your hotel your arrival time. Ask for a late check-in note on the booking. Resorts in Bávaro and Cap Cana have 24-hour reception; small hotels in Las Terrenas or Cabarete may need a code or a night porter.
  4. Sort data and cash. SIM kiosks and currency exchange may be closed late. Turn on roaming or an eSIM, and carry small US dollar bills for the taxi or tip.

How transfer companies handle delays

Private transfers. Most private operators in the DR track flights and move your pickup to the actual landing time without charge. Many include a period of free waiting after the plane lands, often around an hour, to cover immigration and bags. After that, some charge per extra half hour or hour. The key questions:

  • Does free waiting start at scheduled or actual landing time?
  • What happens if immigration takes 90 minutes on a busy evening?
  • Is there a 24-hour phone or WhatsApp number to call on landing?

Shared shuttles. These run on group timetables built around arrival waves. If your flight is two hours late, the van may have left. Some operators move you to the next departure; others offer a private car for a supplement, or nothing. Read the terms.

Cancelled flights. If your flight is cancelled or you miss a connection and arrive the next day, contact the company as soon as you know. Most reschedule at no cost with notice; few refund a no-show. Transfer companies do not cover the cost of a missed flight on departure, so leave a margin on the way back.

Uber Reserve. Where Uber offers it, scheduled airport rides include up to 45 minutes of waiting after landing for UberX, Comfort and XL, and 60 minutes for premium tiers, before late fees. Availability at PUJ is not guaranteed.

Night driving: why the route length matters

Dominican highways are faster at night because there is less traffic, but they are also riskier. Common hazards after dark include vehicles and motorbikes with no lights, pedestrians and animals on unlit stretches, unmarked speed bumps and trucks on the Autovía del Coral and Autopista Duarte. Professional transfer drivers make these runs every night; the risk is higher when a tired visitor drives an unfamiliar rental car.

Short routes are fine at night with a driver. PUJ to Bávaro or Cap Cana is 15 to 40 minutes, mostly on resort-area roads. See PUJ to Bávaro and PUJ to Cap Cana. SDQ to the Zona Colonial is 25 to 40 minutes along the Autopista Las Américas, faster at night (SDQ to Zona Colonial).

Long routes deserve a second thought. PUJ to Santo Domingo is 2 h 30 to 3 h; SDQ to Las Terrenas about 2 h 30 on the Samaná highway; SDQ to Punta Cana 2 h 30 to 3 h. Arriving at 2 or 3 a.m. after a long day of travel, with a winding final stretch into Las Terrenas, is tiring and riskier. Many travelers land at SDQ, sleep in Boca Chica or Santo Domingo and continue after breakfast. A transfer from SDQ to Boca Chica is only 10 to 15 minutes.

Night surcharges and pricing

Some taxi operators and transfer companies add around US$5 to US$10 for pickups roughly between midnight and 6 a.m. Others include all hours in one price. Ask before you confirm. For long routes, the extra time a driver spends returning empty at night can be built into the quote, so night prices on routes like PUJ to Santo Domingo may be slightly higher.

If nobody is waiting for you

It happens: a driver gets the time wrong, a rep is waiting at the wrong door, or a shuttle has left.

  • Check outside the building. At PUJ, many transfer reps and drivers wait in the open-air area outside arrivals rather than inside the terminal.
  • Call or message the company on the number in your confirmation. Most operate on WhatsApp.
  • Give it 15 to 20 minutes, then use the official taxi stand. Keep the receipt to claim a refund from the transfer company.
  • Do not accept a ride from someone who approaches you saying they were sent by your company unless they can show your name and booking details.

Departures in the early morning

The same logic applies in reverse. Flights leaving PUJ or SDQ early in the morning mean pickups at 4 or 5 a.m. Pre-book the night before, confirm the time with the driver, and leave a buffer: airlines in the DR generally advise arriving around three hours before international flights. Shared shuttles may collect you even earlier to fit their route, another reason families and couples often choose a private car for the return (see the private vs shared transfer guide).

Quick plan for a late arrival

  • Before: e-Ticket done, transfer booked with flight number, hotel told, data working.
  • On landing: message your driver, clear immigration and customs, walk out to the meeting point.
  • If delayed: your driver should already know; message anyway.
  • Long route after 10 p.m.: consider a night near the airport.

You can request a quote for a late pickup and mention your landing time so the operator can plan for it.

What we could not verify

Free waiting time varies between companies, and we found no industry standard; “around an hour” reflects many but not all 2025 and 2026 listings. Night surcharges are not applied uniformly. Flight schedules change by season, so check the arrivals board for your airport and date.

Frequently asked questions

Are there taxis at Punta Cana Airport late at night?

Yes, the official taxi stand at PUJ serves late arrivals, though with fewer cars after the last big wave of flights. Some operators add around US$5 to US$10 for pickups in the middle of the night. At smaller airports such as POP, LRM and AZS, taxis may be scarce after the last scheduled flight, so pre-book.

What happens if my flight is delayed and I booked a transfer?

Most private transfer companies track your flight and adjust the pickup to the actual landing time, with a period of free waiting after landing (often around an hour, sometimes more). Shared shuttles are less flexible: if you miss the group departure, you may be moved to a later run or need a private car. Check the policy in writing before you fly.

Do shared shuttles run at night?

Fewer of them. Many shared services thin out after about 9 or 10 p.m. If you land late, a private transfer or the official taxi is the dependable choice.

Is it safe to drive from the airport at night?

The main toll highways are lit in places and in good condition, but night driving in the DR carries real risks: unlit vehicles, motorbikes without lights, people and animals on the road. With a professional driver it is routine. Driving a rental car yourself at night after a long flight is the option to avoid.

Should I stay near the airport if I land very late?

For long onward trips, yes. Landing at SDQ after 10 p.m. with a 2 h 30 drive to Las Terrenas or Punta Cana ahead, a night in Santo Domingo or Boca Chica and an onward transfer in the morning is usually safer and often not much more expensive.

Will my resort let me check in at 1 a.m.?

Large resorts have 24-hour front desks, but tell them your arrival time in advance so the room is held. Smaller hotels and villas may need a late check-in arrangement.
