Uber works at Dominican airports unevenly. At Santo Domingo Las Américas (SDQ) it has designated pickup zones since mid 2025 and is usually the cheapest way into the city. At Punta Cana (PUJ) the app works but airport pickups are awkward and contested, so most visitors are better off with the official taxi or a pre-booked transfer. At Santiago (STI) UberX is widely used. At Puerto Plata (POP), La Romana and Samaná coverage is patchy to nonexistent.
The short answer: At SDQ, use Uber from the signed pickup zone. At PUJ, do not count on it for arrival: the official taxi to Bávaro is around US$30 to US$55 and a pre-booked car costs about the same. At STI, Uber is the budget choice. At POP, LRM and AZS, book ahead or take the taxi. inDrive exists in the DR but has no airport arrangement we could find.
Why Uber at Dominican airports is complicated
Uber launched in Santo Domingo in 2015 and in Punta Cana and Bávaro in 2020. Since then, organized taxi groups in tourist zones have repeatedly clashed with app drivers over pickups at airports and hotels. Dominican press has reported confrontations in Bávaro and Punta Cana as recently as 2023, and authorities, including CESTUR (the tourist police) and INTRANT, have intervened on both sides at different times.
The result is that the rules on paper and what happens at the curb are not always the same. Uber’s own airport pages say pickup locations depend on the airport and ride type and that you should follow in-app directions. That is the most reliable instruction you will get.
Airport by airport
| Airport | Uber pickups | Practical verdict (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| SDQ, Santo Domingo | Designated zones since mid 2025 | Works well. Usually the cheapest option to the city |
| PUJ, Punta Cana | App works, no official curb bay | Unreliable on arrival. Use taxi or pre-booked car |
| STI, Santiago | UberX widely used | Good budget choice for Santiago city |
| POP, Puerto Plata | Patchy | Few drivers; taxi or pre-booking is safer |
| LRM, La Romana | Very limited | Taxi or pre-booking |
| AZS, El Catey (Samaná) | Effectively none | Pre-book |
Santo Domingo (SDQ)
In June 2025 Uber announced dedicated pickup areas just outside the terminal at Las Américas, with signs pointing to them. There are two: one for Uber Select (a premium tier that local tourist taxi drivers were invited to join) and one for standard products such as UberX, Comfort and UberXL. Request the ride once you have your bags, then follow the app.
To the Zona Colonial, Gazcue or Piantini, Uber was commonly showing around US$15 to US$25 in 2026, against around US$30 to US$45 for the airport taxi. Prices surge at peak arrival times and in heavy rain. Details on the drive are on our SDQ to Zona Colonial and SDQ to Piantini pages.
Punta Cana (PUJ)
This is where most of the confusion lives. The Uber app does work at PUJ, and some travelers do get picked up. But there is no official app pickup bay at arrivals, and several 2025 and 2026 guides describe drivers asking riders to walk out of the terminal area to meet them. Some reports say only Uber Select is offered at times, and UberX coverage is limited toward Cap Cana, Uvero Alto and Macao. Wait times stretch when several flights land together.
Weigh that against the alternatives. The official taxi to Bávaro is around US$30 to US$55, and a pre-booked private car is in the same range with a driver waiting inside with a sign. Saving US$10 to US$15 with Uber is possible, but dragging luggage along a hot access road after a long flight rarely feels worth it. Once you are at your hotel, Uber is far more useful for short hops around Bávaro. Compare options on PUJ to Bávaro and PUJ to Cap Cana.
Two warnings that apply everywhere, but especially at PUJ:
- Ignore anyone in the terminal offering “Uber”. Uber’s own guidance is not to accept rides from solicitors inside the terminal.
- Match the plate and car to the app before you get in. If they do not match, cancel.
Santiago (STI)
Cibao airport is 15 to 25 minutes from central Santiago, and UberX is a common way into the city, usually around US$12 to US$15 against around US$25 to US$35 by taxi. Uber’s taxi-hail option is reportedly not available here, so you order a standard UberX. For Jarabacoa or Puerto Plata, a pre-booked car is the realistic choice: see STI to Jarabacoa.
Puerto Plata (POP)
Uber operates in Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete with fewer drivers than in the big cities. At POP itself availability is inconsistent, especially in the evening, and taxi drivers at the airport have a strong presence. The airport taxi to Sosúa is around US$25 to US$35, so the savings are small. See POP to Sosúa.
La Romana (LRM) and El Catey (AZS)
Both are small airports with limited app coverage. At LRM, guests of Casa de Campo usually have hotel transport arranged. At AZS, there is effectively no Uber; pre-book your ride to Las Terrenas or Samaná (AZS to Las Terrenas).
What about inDrive?
inDrive, the app where you propose a fare and drivers accept or counter, operates in the Dominican Republic, mainly in Santo Domingo and Santiago. It can be cheaper than Uber on city trips. We found no airport-specific agreement, signed pickup zone or official statement about inDrive at any Dominican airport. In practice that means:
- At SDQ you would meet the driver outside the official zones, which is more hassle with luggage.
- At PUJ the same friction that affects Uber applies, with fewer drivers.
- Fare negotiation in Spanish is common, so it suits travelers comfortable with that.
For an arrival with bags, inDrive is a fallback, not a plan.
Getting the app ready before you fly
- Data. Airport wifi rarely reaches the curb. Turn on roaming or install an eSIM before departure. Dominican SIM cards are sold at PUJ and SDQ, but the kiosk may be closed late at night.
- Payment. Add a card that works abroad. Cash is accepted in the DR in some cases, but the driver may not have change.
- Uber Reserve. You can schedule an airport pickup in advance where Uber offers it. Uber says drivers wait up to 45 minutes after landing for UberX, Comfort and XL (60 minutes for premium tiers) before late fees apply. At PUJ, availability of Reserve is not guaranteed.
- Car seats. Uber does not guarantee child seats. If you travel with small children, read our car seats guide.
Uber vs the alternatives on arrival
| Situation | Best bet |
|---|---|
| Couple landing at SDQ in daytime, going to Zona Colonial | Uber from the signed zone |
| Family with five bags landing at PUJ | Official taxi or pre-booked van |
| Arrival after 11 p.m. at any airport | Pre-booked transfer with flight tracking |
| Solo traveler at STI going to central Santiago | UberX |
| Anyone landing at AZS | Pre-booked car |

What we could not verify
Uber’s arrangements at Dominican airports change, and we found no official 2026 statement from Uber, the airport operators or INTRANT on PUJ pickups. The SDQ pickup zones are confirmed by a June 2025 announcement. Uber fare ranges above are typical figures reported in 2026, not quotes. Check the app on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take an Uber from Punta Cana Airport?
Sometimes, but do not plan on it. The app works at PUJ, yet there is no official curbside pickup bay, local taxi unions push back against app drivers, and pickups are often arranged at a spot outside the terminal area. Coverage for UberX is thin toward Cap Cana and Uvero Alto. For arrival, the official taxi or a pre-booked transfer is more dependable.
Does Uber pick up at Santo Domingo Las Américas Airport (SDQ)?
Yes. Since mid 2025 SDQ has designated Uber pickup zones just outside the terminal, with signage, separated by service type (Uber Select in one, UberX, Comfort and XL in another). Follow the in-app directions after you request.
How much is an Uber from SDQ to the Zona Colonial?
Uber prices change with demand, but in 2026 the run from SDQ to the Zona Colonial was typically well under the airport taxi fare of around US$30 to US$45, often around US$15 to US$25. Check the price in the app before confirming.
Does inDrive work at Dominican airports?
inDrive operates in the Dominican Republic, mainly in Santo Domingo and Santiago. We found no airport-specific agreement or pickup zone for it, so treat it like a regular ride you meet off the curb, and expect it to be less predictable than Uber at airports.
Can Uber take me to the airport?
Yes. Drop-offs at all the main airports are generally fine. The friction is about pickups, not drop-offs.
Do I need a local SIM to use Uber at the airport?
You need working data. Airport wifi is unreliable at the curb, so turn on roaming or buy an eSIM before you fly.
